Bedfordshire County Council ceased to exist on 1 April 2009 when unitary councils were introduced across the whole of Bedfordshire.
All services previously hosted by the County Council are now provided by either Bedford Borough Council or
Central Bedfordshire Council depending on the area concerned.If you would like to find out information about services provided in the Bedford Borough

Did you know that Bedford has one of only twelve directly elected Mayors in the UK ? This means that the Mayor has real political power and exerts more influence in the office than Local Authority appointed mayors who are often little more than ceremonial figures who chair council meetings. Bedford’s current Mayor, Dave Hodgson, is a Liberal Democrat and was elected in October 2009, after the late (and first elected Mayor of Bedford), Frank Branston, passed away.
