A few miles south of Bedford, a £400 million project will create the world’s largest freshwater aquarium and aquatic theme. Nirah aims to promote understanding of the connection between freshwater and life. At its heart will be the world’s first freshwater sanctuary, a unique resource for conservation, education and science as much as for entertainment and inspiration. Assuming Nirah secures planning consent and funding, work will start in winter 2010 with the opening pencilled in for Easter 2012.
